Basement Flooding Repair and Prevention

Is your basement suffering from flooding? AJM Septic and Excavating offers quick and easy basement flooding repair and prevention. Call now to get your flooding issues fixed!

Basement flooding is the result of a few different problems.

Most often, a high groundwater table and heavy rain cause the water levels on a property to rise. Rising water is a powerful force, and any cracks in a basement floor, however small, can cause flooding.

Water getting into a basement is a big problem.

First of all, there is a loss of storage space. Nothing can be stored safely with the fear that it will be soaked in the next rain. Plus, wet basements can lead to mold problems in the future.

Many people think that the problem of basement flooding should be solved inside the basement itself with a sump pump or strip drains installed inside. However, this is the WRONG APPROACH.

A sump pump is noisy, can fail, and standing water can cause mold problems and other health concerns.

The goal of a homeowner should not be to remove water from the basement, but rather, to prevent it from ever arriving.

So how do you prevent flooding in your basement?

The first step to fix a flooded basement is to repair or install new footing drains.

Footing drains are very simple, effective solutions to water problems.

The footing of your home is the lowest point of the foundation. Footing drains sit below the walls of your home at the footing elevation. The pipe used is a perforated pipe. Small holes in the side allow water to enter the pipe, and flow out and away from the home. Gravel surrounds the pipe to keep dirt, and organic matter, from clogging the drains.

Footings use the path of least resistance method of water removal. By providing groundwater a place to flow away to, it prevents water from squeezing into the cracks of your home.

After footing drains are installed, as a preventative measure, the walls of the foundation can be cleaned and tarred. This will be sure to fill even the smallest cracks and prevent any surface water to run down the side of the walls before being removed by the footing drains.
