What Are Gabion Baskets?

January 16, 2020 by AJM

What are Gabion Baskets?

Whether you realize it or not, you may already know.  Many of the Gabion Basket applications that we are familiar with can be seen along major highway routes  as structural retaining walls.

Because they are used primarily in a municipal, commercial or industrial setting, we homeowners would rarely consider them as an option for a project around the house.  But should we?

The answer to that is YES! Let’s learn more about this versatile product and see 11 reasons why (see last caption)  this one is for you!

Gabion Baskets:  What are they?

  • They are a woven steel wire basket that is box-shaped

    • they can be galvanized
    • poly coated or
    • plain steel
    • galvanized and poly-coated baskets are rust-resistant

  • They come in various sizes
    • generally they start at 3′ and range in 3′ increments to 12′ in length
    • 4.5′ wide
    • 1′ – 3′ in height
  • The baskets are assembled by hand and
    • are generally  filled with stones of various sizes
    • can also be filled with decorative stone or decorative sea glass

What are they used for?

Gabion baskets are versatile and can be used in a variety of settings, including commercial, industrial  or residential applications, such as:

  • erosion control
  • stabilizing stream beds and steep slopes
  • retaining walls
  • drainage
  • gardening
  • steps and more

Residential Application: Retaining wall for structural support of elevated patio, included the use of gabion baskets.

Gabion Baskets are an excellent solution for a variety of applications for commercial, industrial, municipal or residential settings.

Here are 10 reasons why you should consider Gabion Baskets for your next landscape project!
  1. They are cost-effective
  2. They last 75-100 years
  3. They can be used for walls from 3′ – 30′ high
  4. They don’t need a foundation
  5. They are load-bearing
  6. They are permeable and free draining
  7. They are extremely strong and forgiving with settlement
  8. They allow climbing perennials to grow in and around it without getting clogged
  9. They can be filled with various sizes of regular stone, decorative stone, or faced with decorative wood and still maintain their permeability.
  10. They are COMPLETELY sustainable leaving a zero carbon footprint and are extremely versatile – can be used in a variety of Landscape applications!

Gabion Baskets are a completely sustainable option since they are permeable, free-draining, and they allow water to pass through, allowing beautiful climbing plants to grow. They are forgiving with settlement and allow oxygen/gas exchange, leaving a  zero carbon footprint.

They are an affordable option, that can be built to look attractive and will last longer than we will!

In this project, we faced the side that could be seen down below, with a wooden face, making it appear more like a deck. It also gave it a very rustic look with wood and stone.
